Learning objectives
The course offers the students knowledge about theories and concepts underlying the circular economy and present current and past developments of the area. It will enable them to assess and discuss the transition from linear supply chains over closed loops to circular economy. They will learn how circularity and related business models create value and how to implement circularity strategies, including tools and standards for circular economy. Furthermore, students should be enabled to identify opportunities and challenges on the way of implementing a circular business strategy.

Aids Closed book: no aids
However, at all written sit-in exams the student has access to the basic IT application package (Microsoft Office (minus Excel), digital pen and paper, 7-zip file manager, Adobe Acrobat, Texlive, VLC player, Windows Media Player), and the student is allowed to bring simple writing and drawing utensils (non-digital). PLEASE NOTE: Students are not allowed to communicate with others during the exam.

Duration: 20 min. per student, including examiners' discussion of grade, and informing plus explaining the grade
Preparation time: No preparation
Examiner(s): If it is an internal examination, there will be a second internal examiner at the re-exam. If it is an external examination, there will be an external examiner.
Description of the exam procedure

The main aim of the exam is to assess the students ability to apply their acquired knowledge and skills to different settings while to a lesser extend also evaluate learned knowledge. 

 

The first part will be made up by a multiple choice test with questions asking for specific knowledge with a lesser focus on skills application.

 

The second part will consist of different tasks related to the course content. These will be in the form of very brief cases where students will need to apply their knowledge to a specific problem or specific questions revolving around a course topic, both with a higher degree of application of knowledge rather than reproduction of knowledge.

 

Course content, structure and pedagogical approach

In the light of our reaching the planetary boundaries, it becomes increasingly evident that present linear supply chain and even sustainable supply chain operations have proven to be unable to sufficiently deal with the environmental and social challenges. The adoption of circular supply chains, however, has the potential to offer a paradigm shift by changing our understanding of value creation, business models and production processes. In the latter, circular supply chains treat waste of one party as the resource of another. Additionally, the development of business models for the circular economy such as product-service systems or collaborative consumption aims to initiate a transition to a more reflected consumer behavior as well as a changing understanding of value and value creation. This opens up new challenges to overcome, but more importantly new opportunities which will shape the business environment profoundly and successful companies will need to embrace. 

The course Circular Economy provides the students with an overview of current developments in the area of sustainability, sustainable supply chain management and circular economy. Opportunities will be discussed which arise in connection with “closing the loop” of supply chains. Among others, the students will gain in-depth knowledge on relevant business models, various stakeholders in a circular economy, and tools which facilitate the implementation of circularity. The students will be able to assess their own work environment and identify possible opportunities which arise when adopting a circular business approach.

Description of the teaching methods
The course follows a mixed-methods approach. Traditional classroom teaching will be only one part of the course, while the students are expected to take an active role with own presentations and inputs. Cases and exercises are analyzed and discussed to illustrate the theoretical foundation of the course and link it to practical examples.
Feedback during the teaching period
The students will get feedback through these discussions and presentations of own case assignments but also through mini-quizzes and the opportunity of questions to the teacher in class and also through mails or office hours.

Student preparation for exam and classes including readings, case and exercise preparation 114 hours
